Netanyahu Affirms Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed that the Golan Heights, captured during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981, will remain under Israeli control “for eternity.” Speaking at a press conference, Netanyahu expressed gratitude to US President-elect Donald Trump for previously recognizing Israel’s annexation of the territory. He emphasized the strategic importance of the Golan Heights in ensuring Israel’s security and sovereignty.

Israeli Actions in Syria Following Assad’s Collapse

After the collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Israel has intensified its activities in Syria. Over the weekend, Netanyahu ordered Israeli forces to move into a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone and beyond. Israeli airstrikes have targeted major Syrian army air bases to prevent heavy weapons from falling into hostile hands.

While Netanyahu described these actions as necessary for Israel’s security, critics have raised concerns. The United Nations denounced the incursions as a violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria. Neighboring Saudi Arabia also condemned the move, warning that it could hinder Syria’s ability to restore stability.

International Reactions to Israel’s Buffer Zone Move

Israel has justified its military actions as “limited and temporary measures” taken solely for defensive purposes. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reiterated that the buffer zone seizure was a security-driven response to the Syrian army’s abandonment of its posts.

The US State Department acknowledged Israel’s actions and emphasized the importance of stability in the region. A spokesman noted that these measures are not permanent, urging all parties to uphold the 1974 agreement to ensure long-term peace.

Ensuring Stability Amid Regional Unrest

Netanyahu maintained that Israeli control over the Golan Heights is vital for national security, particularly amid ongoing regional instability. As tensions continue to escalate, Israel asserts its right to take measures necessary to protect its borders and citizens.
