Trust in Musk’s Commitment to National Interests

Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, has expressed confidence that Elon Musk, despite being a competitor, will prioritize the national interest. Speaking at the Reuters NEXT conference, Friar addressed Musk’s criticism of OpenAI’s governance changes, stating, “We trust him to compete appropriately and prioritize the nation’s welfare.”

Musk, once a co-founder of OpenAI, now leads xAI, a competing AI company. His role as a key advisor in President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has further amplified his influence. Together with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk is tasked with spearheading efforts to cut government spending and regulations.

OpenAI’s New Product Developments

Friar highlighted the overwhelming demand for OpenAI’s newly launched video generation tool, Sora. Account creation for Sora has been temporarily paused to manage capacity and ensure a measured rollout. Unlike ChatGPT, Sora’s release is being handled cautiously, with access limited to a small group to prioritize feedback and safety.

She also hinted at upcoming releases of AI agents designed for daily tasks and noted advancements in foundational models, which are enhancing reasoning capabilities.

“I think next year will bring significant developments in AI agents,” Friar stated, predicting that the pace of technological progress will surprise many.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships

Friar underscored OpenAI’s evolving relationship with Microsoft, its largest investor and tech partner. While collaboration remains strong, she acknowledged the importance of diversifying partnerships to drive growth across the AI industry.

The company is also addressing governance concerns after a recent leadership exodus, with Friar affirming that OpenAI remains committed to rapid and responsible innovation.

Surging User Growth for ChatGPT

Despite controversies, OpenAI is seeing a renewed surge in ChatGPT usage. Weekly active users increased to 300 million from 200 million just months earlier, driven by the introduction of advanced reasoning models like o1. Friar emphasized that OpenAI’s focus on safety and innovation continues to fuel its expansion.
