Rescue Operations Intensify in Port Vila

Rescue teams in Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, are working tirelessly to search for survivors following a devastating earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation. The earthquake, which hit on December 17, has left at least 14 people dead, including those trapped under collapsed buildings and in landslides. Among the crumpled structures is a three-story shop where rescuers worked through the night, pulling out survivors. Unfortunately, one of the individuals rescued did not survive.

Destruction Across Port Vila

The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.3, caused widespread destruction in Port Vila. Multiple buildings, including a four-story concrete block that housed diplomatic missions, were severely damaged. The ground floor of the building collapsed, though the US, French, and Australian staff members inside were reported safe. In other areas, the quake flattened large structures and triggered landslides, including one that buried a bus.

Major Infrastructure Damage

The quake caused significant damage to infrastructure, including the main hospital, bridges, and power lines. At least 10 buildings, including vital facilities like the hospital, were structurally compromised. Two of Vanuatu’s major water reserves were completely destroyed, and mobile and internet connectivity in the area remained spotty. The main wharf was closed due to a major landslide, and the airport, though not operational, could still receive humanitarian aid.

Humanitarian Response Efforts

Australia and New Zealand have pledged to send medical teams and search-and-rescue personnel to assist with the recovery efforts. The United Nations has estimated that around 116,000 people could be severely affected by the disaster. Despite access and communication challenges, humanitarian organizations are working alongside local authorities to provide immediate relief to those impacted by the quake.

The earthquake’s aftermath has left the country grappling with significant infrastructure damage, while residents of Port Vila continue to search for loved ones in the rubble.
