Growing Frustration Among European Leaders

European leaders have expressed mounting concerns over Elon Musk’s influence in political matters, following a series of incendiary posts by the tech billionaire on his X platform. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly criticized the spread of “lies and misinformation” after Musk accused him of being complicit in historical child sex offences in northern England. Musk’s remarks come amidst his increasing alignment with US President-elect Donald Trump, sparking tensions across Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron accused Musk of “directly intervening in elections,” referencing Musk’s support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz labeled Musk’s comments as “erratic,” and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed concerns about Musk’s vast influence in European politics.

Musk’s Allegations and Their Impact

Much of Musk’s focus has been on Britain, particularly on grooming gang scandals that occurred during Starmer’s tenure as the chief state prosecutor for England and Wales from 2008 to 2013. Musk called for a new public inquiry into the matter, claiming that Starmer and other officials, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, were complicit in the crimes.

Musk’s inflammatory posts, including labeling Starmer as “utterly despicable” and calling for his imprisonment, have led to calls from some opposition politicians for a fresh national probe. However, Starmer rejected these demands, emphasizing that previous inquiries were comprehensive.

The grooming scandals involved widespread abuse of vulnerable young girls in towns such as Rochdale, Rotherham, and Oldham. Earlier reports found failures by police and social workers, partly due to fears of appearing racist. None of these investigations blamed Starmer or suggested he obstructed justice.

Backlash Against Musk

The controversy has intensified tensions between Starmer’s government and far-right supporters. Musk’s support for figures like Tommy Robinson, a well-known far-right agitator, and his attacks on UK officials like minister Jess Phillips have drawn widespread criticism. Musk accused Phillips, a former women’s refuge worker, of being a “rape genocide apologist” and suggested she should face imprisonment.

Starmer responded by condemning online misinformation and intimidation, warning that such tactics aim to incite violence and amplify division. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, however, has called for a new national inquiry into the scandals, further fueling the debate.

Musk’s Actions Stir European Tensions

Beyond the UK, Musk has faced backlash for his interference in German politics. His support for the far-right AfD ahead of Germany’s February snap elections has alarmed European leaders. Chancellor Scholz criticized Musk for his “unpredictable” behavior after Musk called him an “incompetent fool.”

The billionaire also surprised British audiences by retracting his endorsement of Nigel Farage, stating that the anti-immigration Reform party needs new leadership.

Musk’s involvement in European political debates has raised significant concerns about the influence of tech billionaires in global governance, with leaders calling for greater accountability and regulation.
