Dispute Turns Violent at Featherly Regional Park
A peaceful afternoon gathering at Featherly Regional Park in Yorba Linda was shattered by gunfire after a man allegedly attempted to run over someone with his car before shooting two people and then himself. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that three people, including the gunman, were hospitalized following the incident.
Park Filled With Families and Events
The shooting occurred during a busy day at the park, which is typically a quiet RV and camping site in the Santa Ana Canyon area. At the time, the park was hosting several events, including a 9-year-old girl’s birthday party near a ropes course and a vintage Volkswagen car show. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted among the crowd.
“There were about 25 to 30 kids on the ropes course,” said witness Andra Montano. “All of a sudden it was, ‘Hit the ground! Everyone get down!’”
Suspect Returned After Earlier Altercation
Authorities reported that the suspect had been involved in an earlier dispute at the park and returned later in the day. Upon his return, he attempted to run over one of the individuals involved in the argument using his vehicle. After the failed attempt, he exited the vehicle and opened fire, hitting at least two people before turning the gun on himself.
“All involved parties were known to each other,” said Sgt. Gerard McCann of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
Three people sustained gunshot wounds, including the suspected shooter. All were transported to a local hospital, though their conditions have not been disclosed. A fourth individual was struck by the vehicle during the incident, but their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
