Union President Accused of Financial Misconduct
Freddy Escobar, president of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC), has been suspended following accusations of serious financial misconduct. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the parent organization of UFLAC, alleges that Escobar spent more than $265,000 in union funds without providing any documentation or receipts to justify the expenditures.
Broader Mismanagement Within Union Leadership
The audit conducted by IAFF also points to financial malpractice by other former UFLAC officials. Former secretary Adam Walker allegedly transferred union funds into a personal account and made additional undocumented expenses. Likewise, former treasurer Domingo Albarran is accused of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars without any receipts or explanation.
In total, the IAFF claims over $800,000 in member dues were spent through credit card charges that cannot be properly accounted for.
Statement to Union Members
In a letter to L.A. firefighters, the IAFF stated:
“The leadership of UFLAC has abdicated its fiduciary responsibilities and placed Local 112 in ill repute. The financial malpractice by the leadership of UFLAC has dealt serious harm to the membership.”
Escobar Denies Allegations
Escobar has not publicly responded to inquiries from reporters but addressed the accusations on his personal Instagram.
“These false allegations are disgusting and politically motivated by those who want to attack the union and me personally, and I’m going to clear my name,” he wrote.
The IAFF launched the audit after concerns were raised by UFLAC’s current treasurer, prompting the investigation into the union’s financial practices.
