Overview of the Lawsuit Against Smokey Robinson

Motown legend Smokey Robinson is at the center of a multi-million dollar lawsuit, with four former housekeepers accusing him of repeated sexual assault and rape. The legal action, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims the incidents occurred between 2007 and 2024, alongside allegations of labor violations such as a hostile work environment, excessive work hours, and unpaid wages. The plaintiffs are seeking at least $50 million in damages.

Allegations of Sexual Misconduct

The housekeepers allege that Robinson targeted them when alone, subjecting them to sexual assault and rape despite their objections. Many of these incidents reportedly took place at his Chatsworth home. Their attorney, John Harris, stated, “We believe that Mr. Robinson is a serial and sick rapist, and must be stopped,” highlighting the severity of the claims.

Role of Frances Robinson in the Case

The lawsuit also implicates Robinson’s wife, Frances, accusing her of being aware of her husband’s alleged misconduct and failing to intervene. It further claims she contributed to a hostile work environment by using ethnic slurs and leveraging the women’s financial dependence to silence them. Attorney Herbert Hayden noted, “We believe she was aware of the misconduct… and used their status to keep them in check.”

Impact on the Housekeepers and Their Silence

The former housekeepers, who appeared at a news conference but concealed their identities, earned below minimum wage and received no overtime pay. Their lawyers explained that fear of losing income—needed for rent and food—prevented them from speaking out sooner. Robinson’s celebrity status reportedly intimidated them, leaving them feeling powerless. They have not yet reported the allegations to police, though this could change.
