Early Morning Confrontation in South LA
A burglary investigation in South Los Angeles turned violent when police exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect inside a liquor store. The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. near West Jefferson Boulevard and 9th Avenue, after officers responded to a possible burglary call.
Suspect Opened Fire on Police
Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Malik Salaah, who allegedly concealed a firearm while officers attempted to detain him. According to police, Salaah pulled a gun from his waistband, sparking an officer-involved shooting.
Investigators reported that Salaah fired multiple rounds at officers both inside the liquor store and while exiting, before fleeing the scene on foot.
Arrest and Hospitalization
Police pursued Salaah for about two blocks before taking him into custody. He had been struck by gunfire and was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the confrontation.
Charges and Evidence Collected
Salaah has been absentee booked for attempted murder of a peace officer. Police recovered an unloaded 9mm pistol with a high-capacity magazine at the scene.
The LAPD Force Investigation Division (FID) is currently reviewing the shooting as part of their ongoing investigation.
