A shooting broke out on Black Friday evening, November 28, 2025, at Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, California, leaving three people wounded, including a 16-year-old girl.
The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. local time on the second floor near Macy’s. According to authorities, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two individuals. During the altercation, one person pulled out a firearm and opened fire. Three bystanders — an adult male, an adult female, and a teenage girl — were struck by gunfire. All sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police have stressed that this was an isolated incident and not an active shooter situation targeting random shoppers. The suspect, described as a man who was accompanied by several women pushing strollers, fled the scene with the group shortly after the shots were fired. As of the latest updates, the shooter remains at large.
Shoppers inside the busy mall, one of the largest in the Bay Area, described chaotic scenes as hundreds rushed toward exits. Cellphone footage showed people evacuating with their hands raised while following police instructions. Shattered glass from a storefront window hit by a stray bullet was visible on the floor.
San Jose Police Sergeant Jorge Garibay stated: “This was not random shoppers being targeted. It was a dispute between two individuals that unfortunately injured others. There is no reason this should prevent people from continuing to enjoy the holiday season.”
Authorities are actively reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to identify the suspect and the group he left with. Anyone with video or information about the incident is urged to contact San Jose or Santa Clara police.
Westfield Valley Fair Mall, which straddles the San Jose–Santa Clara city line, is a major shopping destination, especially during Black Friday sales. The mall partially reopened shortly after the area was secured.
