Newport Beach is officially a nonstop construction zone after crews began urgent 24/7 repair work on an abandoned oil well from the 1920s that started leaking oil and methane beneath a residential property. The emergency effort has transformed a quiet neighborhood into a round-the-clock drilling site expected to last at least 10 days.
24/7 Drilling Begins After Oil and Methane Leak Discovered
A massive industrial drill has been installed on Marcus Avenue to reach roughly 800 feet underground, where the damaged well is located. Officials say the emergency repair is essential to stop ongoing leaks and prevent future hazards.
Local police have already warned residents to expect constant noise, detours, and construction activity throughout the day and night. A section of Marcus Avenue has been temporarily closed to make room for the heavy equipment and work crews.
Neighbors React as Construction Zone Takes Over the Street
Despite the intensity of the operation, not everyone is losing their mind over the drilling.
Some residents said the noise is manageable compared to other neighborhood disturbances, while others were relieved that officials acted quickly to contain the leak.
The leak was first discovered in October, forcing several residents to evacuate after methane and oil were found beneath one home. Although most neighbors were eventually cleared to return, the most impacted property remains red-tagged indefinitely due to safety concerns.
State-Funded Emergency Work Expected to Continue for Days
The state is covering the cost of the 24-hour repair operation, and crews say drilling will continue through the night for at least the next 10 days. Additional work may follow depending on the condition of the well once they reach it.
Local officials emphasize that the around-the-clock repair work is necessary to fully seal the abandoned well and prevent further leaks.
