Eight student athletes from the Anaheim High School running team were hospitalized after a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into them at a busy Anaheim intersection. Police are now investigating the incident as a possible DUI collision.
High School Runners Struck While Waiting at the Intersection
The crash happened Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and W. North Street, where the team had paused during their training run. According to Anaheim police, the vehicle suddenly left the roadway around 3 p.m. and hit the group of teenagers.
A total of eight students were injured, and three people required immediate medical transportation, including the 27-year-old driver. All individuals were taken to the hospital, and their conditions have not been confirmed.
Investigation Underway: Possible DUI Crash
Authorities say they are treating the collision as a possible DUI incident, though the investigation is ongoing. School resource officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash.
A team coach who was running with the students witnessed the moment of impact. Another coach reported that at least one student was listed in critical condition.
