Typhoon Kong-rey, one of the most significant storms to impact Taiwan in decades, led to the cancellation of multiple Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot flights on October 31.
Flight Diversions and Cancellations
A flight originally scheduled to land in Taipei was diverted to Hong Kong due to the adverse weather conditions caused by the typhoon. Flight SQ878, carrying 317 passengers and 14 crew members, successfully landed at Hong Kong International Airport around 5:10 PM local time. In response to the disruption, SIA provided meals and meal vouchers to the affected customers on the ground. Later updates indicated that SQ878 departed Hong Kong for Singapore at 6:56 PM local time, with hotel accommodations arranged for affected customers in Singapore. Additionally, SIA’s flight SQ879, which was set to depart from Taipei to Singapore on the same evening, was canceled.
Impact on Scoot Flights
Scoot, SIA’s low-cost subsidiary, also felt the effects of Typhoon Kong-rey, resulting in the cancellation of three flights between Singapore and Japan that were scheduled to transit through Taipei (flights TR893, TR874, and TR875). A spokesperson for Scoot mentioned that they are reaching out to affected customers to re-accommodate them on alternative flights when possible. Customers who choose not to continue their travel can request a full refund.
Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Measures
Both airlines are closely monitoring the situation and will adjust their flight schedules as necessary. The typhoon made landfall on Taiwan’s east coast, leading to the cancellation of over 300 international flights and all domestic flights. As it approaches China’s Fujian province, the storm is forecasted to continue its course on Friday. Tragically, one death in Taiwan has been reported as a result of the storm.
