In response to North Korea’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test, the United States, South Korea, and Japan conducted a joint air drill on November 3, showcasing their united front against growing regional threats. This drill came shortly after North Korea’s test of a powerful solid-fuel ICBM capable of reaching the US mainland, according to experts.

Coordinated Military Response

The air drill included the deployment of the US B-1B Lancer, a high-speed heavy bomber known for its impressive payload capacity of 34,000 kilograms of munitions, as well as South Korea’s F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets and Japan’s F-2 jets. The coordinated exercise underscored the strength of the US-ROK alliance and its commitment to a strong extended deterrence strategy. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized that the exercise demonstrated an “overwhelming capability to swiftly and accurately strike simulated targets,” with Japanese and South Korean jets escorting the B-1B bomber south of the Korean peninsula.

Continued Deployment of Strategic Bombers

This marked the fourth deployment of the B-1B to the Korean peninsula in 2024 and the second time a trilateral exercise was organized this year, demonstrating the united stance of these allies in addressing Pyongyang’s military provocations. North Korea’s latest missile launch achieved record heights and distances, according to tracking by the militaries of South Korea, Japan, and North Korea itself.

North Korea’s Missile Advancements and International Concerns

The missile, identified as the Hwasong-19, was hailed by North Korean media as “the world’s strongest strategic missile,” and leader Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the launch. The incident has heightened international concerns amid reports that Pyongyang has purportedly sent thousands of troops to Russia, potentially contributing to combat operations in Ukraine under Russian command.

These developments add to the already tense security situation, reinforcing the commitment of the US, South Korea, and Japan to joint military readiness and deterrence efforts in the region.
