A Los Angeles Police Department officer was shot and injured Saturday afternoon in Exposition Park, South Los Angeles, during a confrontation with an armed suspect. The officer, a long-time veteran of the LAPD\u2019s gang enforcement unit, is expected to survive. Authorities say the incident occurred during a routine pedestrian stop that escalated into a foot pursuit and gunfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident began around 3:30 p.m. near 39th Place and Western Avenue. Two LAPD officers attempted to question a pedestrian when the individual suddenly fled. While being pursued, the suspect turned around and fired multiple shots at the officers, hitting one of them. The wounded officer\u2019s partner returned fire but did not strike the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was captured shortly afterward and is now in custody. LAPD officials confirmed that attempted murder charges are forthcoming. Investigators recovered the suspect\u2019s firearm and are currently reviewing body camera footage and witness statements to reconstruct the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell expressed relief over the officer\u2019s condition, stating, \u201cTonight, I truly believe that we were blessed. Our officer is on the path to recovery, and that\u2019s the most important thing.\u201d Detectives remained at the scene through the evening, collecting evidence and speaking with community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the aftermath of the shooting, rapper and former gang member Flavor Flav addressed gun violence in America, taking a strong stance in favor of tighter gun control laws. \u201cI wasn\u2019t a legal gun owner. None of us were legal gun owners. So guns were in the wrong hands \u2014 even my hands,\u201d he said, sharing his personal experience during an ABC News interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief McDonnell welcomed the message, regardless of the source: \u201cWhoever the messenger is, if it helps push us in a better direction, we welcome it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
