Israel’s Admission and Iran’s Outrage
Iran strongly condemned Israel’s recent acknowledgment of its responsibility for the killing of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year, calling it a “heinous crime.” In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, described the admission as a “brazen confession” of Israel’s involvement in the assassination.
The Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, publicly admitted on Monday that Israel was responsible for the killing of Haniyeh, which had been a highly secretive operation up until then. The Hamas leader was killed on July 31 in a guesthouse in Tehran by an explosive device reportedly planted by Israeli operatives.
Iranian Retaliation and Claims of Legitimacy
Iran had long accused Israel of being behind Haniyeh’s death, with Tehran’s accusations confirmed only after Israel’s admission. Iran responded to the killing in October by launching 200 missiles at Israel, an act which Israeli defense systems claimed intercepted most of the missiles.
Ambassador Iravani stated that Israel’s actions were a “heinous terrorist act,” emphasizing that Iran’s missile strikes in retaliation were justified. He further asserted that Israel’s admission validated Iran’s defensive response in October and reinforced Iran’s longstanding stance that Israel poses the greatest threat to regional and international peace and security.
Regional Tensions and the Broader Conflict
This incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, with Israel also involved in the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in September 2024. In addition, Israel targeted Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza on October 16, 2024. Sinwar was blamed for masterminding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel, which ignited the ongoing war in Gaza. This conflict has resulted in a massive loss of life, with tens of thousands killed and large portions of Gaza reduced to rubble.
