A Message of Hope and Change

On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis led the faithful in a solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, celebrating the birth of Jesus and marking the opening of the Catholic Holy Year 2025. In his sermon, the Pope focused on the theme of hope, emphasizing that the story of Jesus, born as a poor carpenter’s son, should inspire people to believe that anyone can make a meaningful impact on the world.

Pope Francis called for hope to drive people not to stay stagnant in complacency but to act and bring about change. “Hope calls us to be upset with things that are wrong and to find the courage to change them,” he said, urging his audience to strive for transformation in both personal and societal contexts.

The Catholic Holy Year: A Time for Renewal

The Christmas Eve Mass also marked the beginning of the 2025 Catholic Holy Year, a Jubilee year that typically occurs every 25 years. This special time is dedicated to peace, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal, drawing millions of pilgrims to Rome. During the Jubilee, Catholics can obtain indulgences, or remission of their sins, by making a pilgrimage through the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Pope oversaw the opening of the Holy Door at the start of the Mass, a door that is only opened during Jubilee years. It is expected that up to 100,000 pilgrims will walk through the door daily throughout the year.

A Call for Debt Relief and Justice

In addition to his spiritual message, Pope Francis renewed his call for developed nations to take action on behalf of poorer countries burdened by debt. He urged them to use the Holy Year as an opportunity to forgive these debts, emphasizing that the Jubilee should serve as a time of liberation for all people in various forms of bondage, both old and new.

The Pope’s call for debt cancellation echoes the actions of Pope John Paul II, whose plea during the 2000 Jubilee led to the cancellation of $130 billion in debt from 2000 to 2015. Francis highlighted the ongoing need for such actions, pointing to the financial struggles that continue to affect low-income nations around the world.

The Pope’s Health and Upcoming Message

Although Pope Francis, who recently turned 88, has been suffering from a cold, he appeared in good form during the Mass, despite a slightly raspy voice. He is set to deliver his traditional Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi blessing on Wednesday, extending his message of peace and goodwill to the city of Rome and the world.
