North Korea Criticizes Rubio’s Remarks
North Korea issued a sharp rebuke on February 3, 2025, to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after he referred to the country as a “rogue state” during a media interview. In its response, North Korea’s foreign ministry stated that Rubio’s comments were harmful to US interests and reiterated that the country would take strong action against what it deemed “hostile US provocations.”
This marks North Korea’s first official condemnation of the Trump administration since the former president returned to office on January 20, 2025.
Missile Defense Shield Plan Sparks Tension
Alongside its criticism of Rubio, North Korea also condemned the United States’ new missile defense shield plan, which was signed by President Trump the previous week. The plan involves the development of an advanced “American Iron Dome” to defend against ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, as well as other aerial threats.
North Korea’s foreign ministry voiced concerns that such a defense system could lead to an arms race, drawing comparisons to the Cold War-era “Star Wars” missile defense initiative. The statement from North Korea further argued that the creation of this new missile shield could provoke adversaries under the guise of addressing a potential threat, even if the system’s feasibility remains uncertain.
Strengthening Self-Defense Capabilities
In light of the increasing security tensions and the United States’ missile defense plans, North Korea emphasized the necessity of strengthening its own military forces. The country reiterated its commitment to developing its self-defense capabilities, focusing particularly on its nuclear deterrence. North Korea’s foreign ministry made it clear that, in the face of escalating global security risks, it would continue to bolster its military strength in response to perceived external threats.
