Musk Pushes for Accountability in Federal Workforce

Elon Musk, billionaire advisor to President Donald Trump, announced that all US federal employees must justify their work or risk losing their jobs. This directive follows Trump’s push for more aggressive government spending cuts, with Musk leading efforts to streamline the federal workforce.

Mandatory Work Reports for Federal Employees

Federal employees received an email from the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) asking them to submit a summary of their work from the past week in approximately five bullet points. While the email did not explicitly state that non-compliance would lead to termination, Musk warned on social media that failure to respond would be considered a resignation.

Musk later suggested the requirements were minimal, stating that “an email with some bullet points that make any sense at all is acceptable.”

Union Backlash and Employee Resistance

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) condemned the move, arguing it disrespects federal employees and the essential services they provide. National President Everett Kelley criticized Musk’s role, stating it was inappropriate for an unelected billionaire with no public service experience to judge government workers.

Several agencies advised employees not to respond until further instructions were given, and union leaders vowed to challenge any unlawful dismissals.

Trump’s Endorsement of Musk’s Cuts

Trump has appointed Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory body tasked with cutting waste and reducing corruption. The initiative has already led to significant workforce reductions, including a planned 5% cut in civilian employees at the Defense Department.

Trump has praised Musk’s efforts but urged him to be even more aggressive in eliminating inefficiencies. Despite criticism and legal challenges, Musk remains committed to working with Trump for as long as he “can be helpful,” emphasizing transparency in DOGE’s operations.
