White House Confirms Aid Suspension
The United States has decided to pause military aid to Ukraine, a White House official confirmed on Monday, March 3. This decision comes just days after President Donald Trump had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
According to the official, the aid suspension is part of a broader review to ensure that US assistance is contributing to a resolution. “The President has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well,” the official stated.
Zelenskyy’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment.
Shift in US Policy on Ukraine
Since taking office in January, Trump has altered US policy toward Ukraine and Russia, adopting a more conciliatory approach toward Moscow. The suspension of aid follows a heated exchange between Trump and Zelenskyy, during which the US president criticized the Ukrainian leader for not expressing enough gratitude for Washington’s support.
The pause will remain in effect until Trump determines that Ukraine’s leadership is genuinely committed to peace, according to reports from Bloomberg and Fox News. “This is not a permanent termination of aid, it’s a pause,” a US official told Fox News.
Scope of the Aid Suspension
Bloomberg reports that all US military equipment not yet delivered to Ukraine will be put on hold. This includes weapons currently in transit via aircraft and ships, as well as those stored in transit hubs such as Poland. Trump has directed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to implement the suspension.
Trump’s Criticism of Zelenskyy
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump denied directly discussing the aid suspension but reiterated that Zelenskyy “should be more appreciative” of US support.
Trump also reacted strongly to an Associated Press report in which Zelenskyy described the end of the war as “very, very far away.” In a statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “This is the worst statement Zelenskyy could have made, and America will not tolerate it for much longer!”
Potential US Investment in Ukraine’s Resources
Despite tensions with Kyiv, Trump suggested that a deal allowing US investment in Ukraine’s mineral resources could still be possible. European leaders have also put forward proposals for a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Russia.
The Trump administration sees such a deal as a way to recover some of the billions of dollars the US has provided to Ukraine in military and financial aid since Russia’s invasion. When asked if the deal was off the table, Trump responded, “No, I don’t think so.”
Trump described the proposed agreement as “a great deal for us” and stated that he would provide further details in his address to Congress on Tuesday night.
