In the small village of Thulasendrapuram in Tamil Nadu, southern India, residents have come together to support Kamala Harris as she competes in the U.S. presidential race. This village, where Harris’ maternal grandfather, PV Gopalan, was born, is preparing to hold special prayers in a Hindu temple on election day, hoping for her success.

Ancestral Ties and Community Support

PV Gopalan, Harris’ grandfather, was born in Thulasendrapuram more than a century ago. After moving to Chennai, Tamil Nadu’s capital, he worked as a senior government official, but his ancestral village still honors his legacy. The temple in Thulasendrapuram features Harris’ name alongside her grandfather’s in a stone inscription that lists local public donations, and a large banner outside the temple reads, “Success to the daughter of the land.”

Village Celebrations Planned

The community is ready for celebrations if Harris wins, with plans to mark the occasion with firecrackers and traditional food sharing. “There will be a special prayer on Tuesday morning at the temple,” shared G Manikandan, a villager who runs a local store nearby.

Global Recognition and Historical Significance

Thulasendrapuram first made international headlines in 2020, when villagers celebrated Harris’ victory as the first female U.S. Vice President with prayers and festivities. Now, they are once again showing their support for her, underscoring the pride they feel for their ancestral connection to the U.S. leader.

In a closely contested election, both Harris and her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, are working hard to mobilize voters, as the final result may not be determined for several days.
