Putin Agrees to Peacekeepers in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted the concept of European peacekeepers as part of a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. During discussions in the Oval Office, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that Europe is prepared to contribute to the effort, emphasizing the need for a truce followed by a peace agreement with security guarantees.
Europe’s Role in Security Guarantees
Macron highlighted that Europe is ready to provide security assurances, potentially including peacekeeping troops. However, he clarified that these forces would not be stationed along the front lines or involved in combat but would instead ensure that any peace agreement is upheld.
Ukraine Minerals Deal in the Works
Trump stated that the United States is nearing a minerals revenue-sharing deal with Ukraine, aimed at recovering some of the financial support previously provided through military aid. He mentioned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could visit soon to finalize the agreement.
Zelenskyy, however, has resisted US demands for $500 billion in mineral wealth as repayment, arguing that the amount of aid received so far does not justify such a high demand, especially without concrete security guarantees.
European Leaders Urge Caution
Amid concerns over Trump’s evolving stance on Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet him later in the week. European leaders, including Macron and Starmer, aim to ensure that any ceasefire deal does not compromise Ukraine’s position or embolden adversaries like China and Iran.
