US-Taiwan Relations Expected to Remain Positive After Election
On November 6 in Taipei, Taiwan’s National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen expressed confidence that the US will maintain its current Taiwan-friendly stance after the presidential election. As the race between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris remains tight, Tsai reassured that Taiwan is actively communicating with the US administration to ensure continued collaboration and stability in their partnership.
Cross-Strait Tensions Expected to Increase During US Transition Period
Tsai noted that over the past five years, China has consistently applied military pressure on Taiwan, including four major military exercises in the past two years. Taiwan will work closely with the US and other international partners to monitor Chinese military movements, aiming to prevent any potential destabilizing actions during the US administration’s transition period.
Taiwan’s Defense Commitment
Taiwan firmly rejects China’s sovereignty claims, asserting that only the people of Taiwan can decide the island’s future. Although the US and Taiwan do not have formal diplomatic ties, the US remains Taiwan’s most important international ally and arms supplier. Tsai emphasized that Taiwan will continue stable communication with the US, with an increased focus on defense and security collaboration in the next phase of their relationship.
No Immediate Response from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office
As of now, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office has not issued a response to Taiwan’s statement regarding potential actions during the US transition period.
