Journalist Ahmad Baker Al-Louh Killed in Israeli Strike

Al Jazeera has condemned the killing of one of its journalists, Ahmad Baker Al-Louh, who died in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza on December 15, 2024. The 39-year-old cameraman was reportedly killed in a targeted attack on a Civil Defence post in Al-Nuseirat Camp, located in central Gaza. Al Jazeera called his death a “targeted killing” and the fifth death of one of its journalists since the war in Gaza began more than 14 months ago.

Israeli Military’s Claims

The Israeli military confirmed the death of Al-Louh, alleging that he was a member of the militant group Islamic Jihad and had previously served as a platoon commander. Israel’s military said that the airstrike targeted a “command and control centre” embedded in the offices of Gaza’s civil defence organization, which it claimed was being used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters to plan attacks on Israeli forces.

Al Jazeera has strongly denied these accusations, asserting that the network’s journalists are being systematically targeted by Israeli forces. The network emphasized that no sensitive information was shared with the suspected militant groups and rejected any allegations of links to Hamas or Islamic Jihad.

Hamas Calls It an “Assassination”

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, condemned the killing as an “assassination” and a “war crime.” The group accused Israel of targeting journalists as part of a broader effort to intimidate the media and deter them from reporting on the situation in Gaza.

Al Jazeera’s Response and Legal Action

Al Jazeera expressed its outrage over the killing, which it said came only days after Israeli forces destroyed Al-Louh’s home in Gaza. The network condemned Israel’s ongoing actions against journalists and media professionals, asserting its commitment to pursuing legal measures to hold the perpetrators accountable for these “crimes.”

Since the war began, Al Jazeera has provided continuous coverage of the conflict, focusing on the impact of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. However, the channel has been embroiled in a long-standing feud with the Israeli government, which has repeatedly accused its journalists of supporting terrorism.

Tensions Between Israel and Al Jazeera

The tension between Israel and Al Jazeera has escalated throughout the conflict. In September 2024, Israeli forces raided Al Jazeera’s office in the West Bank, accusing the network of inciting terror and supporting terrorist activities. Al Jazeera called the raid a “criminal act” and an assault on press freedom.

Earlier in 2024, Israel passed a law allowing it to ban foreign media broadcasts deemed harmful to national security. Based on this law, Al Jazeera’s broadcasts were banned in Israel, and its offices were ordered to close.

Press Freedom Under Threat

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that the war between Israel and Hamas has had an unprecedented toll on journalists in Gaza. According to CPJ’s investigations, at least 137 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon since October 7, 2023. The watchdog stressed the dangers faced by the press in conflict zones, particularly in Gaza, where many journalists have been targeted.
