Political Instability in Both Government and Opposition

Malaysia’s political landscape is facing significant upheaval as cracks appear within both the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance. Key figures from both sides are at the center of the controversy, sparking concerns over coalition unity and stability.

Tengku Zafrul’s Possible Defection Stirs PH Tensions

Speculation surrounding International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz’s potential move from UMNO to PKR has created waves within the PH coalition. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed discussions with Tengku Zafrul but emphasized that nothing has been decided.

This revelation drew backlash from UMNO, with leaders urging the party to reassess its role in the unity government. UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi criticized leaders who prioritize personal ambitions over party loyalty, while secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warned against destabilizing the coalition through party-hopping.

Political analysts suggest that Tengku Zafrul’s limited grassroots support in UMNO fuels his motivation to join PKR. However, any move could disrupt the fragile unity of the federal government. Analysts believe Anwar will likely reconsider, given the backlash and its potential to fracture ties between PH and UMNO.

Selangor Chief Minister Speculation

Adding to the controversy are rumors that Tengku Zafrul could be positioned as Selangor’s chief minister. However, current Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shaari affirmed that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has advised him to serve until the end of his term, ensuring stability in the state.

Tengku Zafrul, responding via social media, denied any discussions about state positions or by-elections, calling the rumors “frivolous” and criticizing toxic political maneuvering.

Ahmad Samsuri’s Resignation Adds to PN Disunity

On the opposition front, PN is grappling with its own challenges after Terengganu Chief Minister Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS resigned as PN’s treasurer-general. His resignation highlights growing dissatisfaction within PAS regarding Bersatu’s dominance in the coalition.

PAS supporters have increasingly called for one of their own to be the prime ministerial candidate in the next election, contrasting with Bersatu’s endorsement of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Analysts point out that PAS, despite having more members of parliament, continues to play “second fiddle” to Bersatu.

While Ahmad Samsuri claimed his resignation was aimed at “strengthening the coalition,” analysts suggest it signals PAS’s warning to Bersatu. The move highlights PAS’s leverage and underscores internal dissatisfaction over the balance of power within PN.

Resolving Coalition Disputes

Both PH and PN now face mounting pressure to resolve internal conflicts that threaten their unity. Analysts emphasize the need for swift action to restore stability, with political leaders urged to address grievances and align on shared goals.

The unfolding developments reflect a period of turbulence in Malaysia’s political arena, where coalition unity remains fragile, and power struggles continue to dominate the agenda.
