Hualien Earthquake Aftermath: Taiwan Faces Rising Casualty Toll and Infrastructure Damage

Death Toll and Injuries Continue to Climb

Following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Hualien County, Taiwan, the number of confirmed fatalities has reached 12, with 1,144 people injured and 18 individuals still missing. The quake has also left 660 people stranded in mountainous areas due to damaged roads and infrastructure.

Major Rescue and Relief Operations Underway

Efforts to reach those trapped or isolated are ongoing. At Silks Place Hotel Tianxiang branch in Taroko National Park, 398 individuals are currently stranded. While 50 hotel staff and guests have made it to safety, 356 remain awaiting rescue. In addition, 85 people are isolated in the Jiuqudong Trail area, and 61 employees are trapped inside the Meilun Mountain Quarry. Rescue teams, including helicopters and specialized personnel, are being deployed to these hard-to-reach locations.

Destruction and Displacement in the Wake of the Quake

The earthquake caused widespread destruction, including landslides that trapped 61 people on the Huide Trail and damaged critical infrastructure. Roads and tunnels in Hualien and surrounding areas were heavily affected, complicating evacuation and rescue efforts. As of now, over 1,000 people have been rescued, while others await assistance in remote regions.

Infrastructure Damage and Power Restoration

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior, more than 100 buildings have sustained damage, with 97 in Hualien City alone. While water supplies have been largely restored, some homes remain without power. Repairs are ongoing, and local authorities are working to secure food and shelter for displaced residents.

National Mourning and Government Support

The Executive Yuan declared a national day of mourning for the victims. Premier Chen Chien-jen expressed condolences and visited Hualien to oversee relief efforts. He emphasized the importance of accelerating rescue operations and ensuring that affected families receive the support they need.
