Key Figure in National Security Case

Hong Kong tycoon and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai is set to testify for the first time in his ongoing collusion trial, one of the most significant cases under the national security law introduced by Beijing in 2020. The 76-year-old, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, faces charges of colluding with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious materials. If convicted, Lai could face life imprisonment.

Allegations of Collusion and Sedition

The case centers on Lai’s use of his newspaper, Apple Daily, which supported the 2019 pro-democracy protests and criticized Beijing’s governance. Prosecutors allege that Lai and six senior executives used the media platform to incite opposition against the government and solicit foreign interference. The prosecution has presented 161 articles, interviews, and social media posts as evidence of sedition and collusion.

Additionally, Lai is accused of backing young activists lobbying for international sanctions through the protest group “Stand With Hong Kong.” Several co-defendants, including senior executives and activists, have pleaded guilty, with some testifying against him.

Health and International Support

Concerns over Lai’s health have grown during his nearly four-year detention. Lai’s legal team and his son have called for stronger intervention from the British government, as Lai is a British citizen. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has labeled Lai’s case a priority and discussed the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

While the Hong Kong government denies allegations of mistreatment, Lai’s legal representatives argue that his detention conditions, including solitary confinement, are harsh. However, they confirmed he is receiving medical care for existing conditions, such as diabetes, and has some access to exercise and daylight.

International Backlash

Rights groups and Western governments view Lai’s trial as a stark example of Hong Kong’s diminishing freedoms under the national security law. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemned his prosecution as indicative of the city’s declining democratic values.

In response, Hong Kong and Beijing have dismissed international criticism, asserting that Lai is a tool of foreign forces seeking to undermine China through Hong Kong. As the trial progresses, it continues to draw global attention to the erosion of freedoms in the once-autonomous city.
