National LGBTQ+ Suicide Prevention Hotline Press 3 Option Eliminated

On July 17, 2025, the specialized 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Press 3 option for LGBTQ+ youth was shut down, removing a critical lifeline for millions of young people. The line, staffed by counselors trained to understand unique challenges such as coming out, gender identity, and family rejection, had handled nearly 1.6 million calls, texts, and chats since its launch in 2022.

The federal government said it would no longer “silo” services, a move that LGBTQ+ advocates argue leaves vulnerable youth without trusted, affirming crisis support.

Advocates Warn of Rising Suicide Risk Among LGBTQ+ Youth

According to The Trevor Project, more than 5.2 million LGBTQ+ youth ages 13-24 live in the U.S., and nearly 39% consider suicide each year—with rates rising to almost half among transgender and nonbinary youth.

“Specialized training builds immediate trust. Without it, young people may feel dismissed or unsafe,” said Mark Henson of The Trevor Project.

States Step In to Provide LGBTQ+ Crisis Support

With the federal LGBTQ+ 988 Press 3 line shut down, several states are taking action:

  • California: Partnered with The Trevor Project, signing a $700,000 contract to train 988 crisis counselors.
  • Colorado: Expanding public outreach and requesting higher cellphone fees to strengthen 988 support.
  • Nevada: Investing $50 million in a new call center and mandating LGBTQ+ training for counselors.
  • Illinois: Funding training with a telecom tax increase and integrating affirming imagery in outreach.
  • North Carolina: Partnering with community organizations to boost support for marginalized groups.

Some states are considering following Washington’s “Press 4” model, which provides a dedicated 988 line for Native American communities.

Federal Debate Over LGBTQ+ Mental Health Crisis Line

Lawmakers from both parties have criticized the removal of the dedicated hotline. Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) joined others in urging the reinstatement of the LGBTQ+ option, emphasizing that “every child in crisis deserves immediate, life-saving support.”

Meanwhile, the White House defended the shutdown, arguing it would prevent taxpayer funding from supporting what it called “radical gender ideology.”

The Future of LGBTQ+ Crisis Intervention

Without the specialized Press 3 option, LGBTQ+ advocates fear youth may lose trust in the 988 system. States are racing to fill the gap, but advocates stress that federal funding and recognition are essential to protect the lives of LGBTQ+ young people.

As the debate continues, organizations like The Trevor Project are working under reduced capacity, raising urgent concerns about how best to serve at-risk youth in a time of increasing need.
