Strong Performance by Prabowo’s Coalition

President Prabowo Subianto’s Advance Indonesia Coalition (KIM Plus) is poised for sweeping victories in Indonesia’s first simultaneous regional elections. Quick counts indicate significant wins for the coalition in key provinces such as West Java, Central Java, East Java, and North Sumatra. These results highlight Prabowo’s growing influence and the continued political clout of his predecessor, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who endorsed several candidates.

In Central Java, KIM Plus candidate Ahmad Luthfi appears to have secured nearly 60% of the vote, while in East Java, Khofifah Indah Parawansa leads with 58%. In West Java, Dedi Mulyadi is ahead with 61%, and in North Sumatra, Jokowi’s son-in-law, Bobby Nasution, looks set to claim victory with 62% of the vote.

Jakarta Gubernatorial Race Heading for a Run-Off

In Jakarta, the race for governor remains undecided. PDI-P candidate Pramono Anung leads with just under or over 50% in various quick counts, but if no candidate secures more than half the vote, a run-off will take place next year.

KIM Plus-backed Ridwan Kamil is in second place with nearly 40%, followed by independent candidate Dharma Pongrekun at around 10%. Analysts suggest the second round could become a critical battle for political prestige.

Challenges for the PDI-P

The elections reveal challenges for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), led by former president Megawati Soekarnoputri. Losses in stronghold provinces like Central and East Java raise questions about the party’s strategy and grassroots effectiveness.

Despite setbacks, PDI-P maintains dominance in Bali, where their candidate Wayan Koster is projected to win with over 60% of the vote. Analysts believe the party will intensify efforts in the Jakarta run-off to maintain its influence on Java Island.

A Test of Political Unity

The regional elections serve as a litmus test for Prabowo’s ability to consolidate power and implement his national agenda, which includes free meals for students and ambitious housing projects. For the opposition, the results indicate the need for recalibration and renewed efforts to regain public trust.

Prabowo and Jokowi emphasized unity after voting, urging winners to govern inclusively and losers to accept the results. “The most important thing is serving and working for the people,” Prabowo stated, reflecting the shared goal of stability amidst political competition.
